HomeCountertop Materials BlogProtecting Design Intent Through Fabrication: A Guide for Interior Designers

Interior designers spend hours choosing the slab, the edge profile and the seam placement for a project, and the fabricator is the one who turns those choices into finished stone. Slab selection for designers is where most of that intent is set, and the edge profiles and seams planned in our shop carry it the rest of the way. At Cutting Edge Stoneworks, the aim on every project is for the stone a designer specifies to be the stone that goes in, fabricated to the approved layout.

Why Fabrication Is Where Design Intent Gets Lost

Most design decisions are settled at the drawing stage, and fabrication is where they turn into stone. In our shop, the slab and edge profile a designer approves are the ones we fabricate, and seams follow the approved layout wherever the stone allows. We lay out jobs in SlabSmith before cutting starts, so seam placement and the run of the veining are worked out on screen while the layout can still change.

The work between template and install stays in our shop at 161 McKenzie Rd. Installs are handled by dedicated crews who take on no other fabricator’s work, and they collect their jobs at the shop and work in StoneApp with our staff.

Slab Selection: Why It Still Happens in Person

Every natural stone we fabricate, from quartzite and marble to soapstone, onyx and semi-precious stone, varies from one slab to the next, so clients choose it in person. Designers can bring clients to our Natural Stone Slab Studio, a 3,500-square-foot space we added in Mooresville in 2026, or to our partner slab yard in Charlotte. A photo or a small sample can’t show how a full slab’s veining and movement will read once it is installed. Quartz is more predictable, with color and pattern that stay consistent, so it is usually specified from samples, and some of the common colors can be seen as full slabs at our shop. A natural stone spec should plan for an in-person slab visit, while a quartz spec can usually be finalized from a sample.

For quartz, Cutting Edge Stoneworks is a Premier Partner with Cambria and the region’s highest-volume Cambria dealer, and designers can also specify Silestone by Cosentino, Emerstone, MSI Q-Quartz, LX Hausys and Eclos with us. Porcelain is the other manufactured surface we fabricate, and we do about as much porcelain and quartz work as natural stone.

Specialty and Hard-to-Source Materials

Some specifications call for a material that not every fabricator works with. When a designer has specified Emerstone for a client, it helps to have a fabrication partner nearby who knows the line, and we are one of only two North Carolina fabricators carrying it. Emerstone, like our other quartz brands, is delivered per project order against the color in the specification. Semi-precious stone and other specialty materials go through the same in-person selection as any natural stone, and a designer bringing a client to choose a high-value slab gets the same one-on-one attention we give a granite or marble selection.

Edge Profiles and Seams: Where Precision Shows

The edge profile is one of the clearest signals of design intent on a finished countertop, and waterfall edges and book-matched seams are where a design shows most. They also take the most planning. We lay out each seam to blend into the stone as closely as the slab allows, placing it with the pattern and veining in mind as well as the cabinets and structure underneath. How closely a book-matched pair lines up depends on the two slabs themselves, which is one more reason the selection happens in person, with the designer and the client looking at the actual stone.

Working a Fabrication Timeline Into a Larger Project

Designers rarely work alone on a project. The countertops have to fit a schedule shared with the cabinet maker, the plumber and the other trades, and a waterfall edge or a book-matched pair often depends on cabinet dimensions that aren’t final until late in the job. Our templating teams take measurements on site once the cabinets are set, without waiting for the slab to arrive, and from there the job is scheduled through our office. A designer can plan the countertop dates with one point of contact on our side, who tracks each date from template to install.

Support After Installation

A finished installation isn’t the end of our involvement. If a seam or an install detail needs a second look after the project is complete, Cutting Edge Stoneworks stands behind the work. For a designer whose name is attached to the finished space, that support counts as much as how the install went on the day.

Working With Cutting Edge Stoneworks

Designers who want a fabrication partner for one project or an ongoing trade relationship can open a trade account with us.
